After a typhoon, rivers clogged with landslide debris flooded 44% more land than before.

A huge typhoon in Taiwan caused over 17,000 landslides that dumped rock and dirt into mountain rivers. In some spots, that debris filled up the riverbed and made floods spread over 44% more land than before. In other spots with less debris, rivers cut deeper channels and plants grew back, so flooding actually shrank there. This shows that damage from a big storm can keep changing flood risk for years afterward.
