Giving a drug within 12 hours cut serious kidney damage or death by about one third.

Tushar Shenoy, Daniel Sanchez-Almanzar et al., Early treatment with rasburicase and risk of kidney replacement therapy and death in adults with tumour lysis syndrome: emulated target trial, BMJ.

Some cancer treatments cause tumors to break down fast. This releases harmful substances into the blood, a problem called tumor lysis syndrome. In a study of 1276 hospital patients, giving a drug called rasburicase within 12 hours lowered the risk of severe kidney damage or death. It also lowered the risk of dying within 90 days.

The number 32.7% vs 42.0%
