A DNA study found 11 gene locations linked to borderline personality disorder.
Fabian Streit, Swapnil Awasthi et al., Genome-wide association analyses of borderline personality disorder identify 11 loci and highlight shared risk with mental and somatic disorders, Nature Genetics.
A large study of DNA looked at over 12,000 people with borderline personality disorder and more than a million people without it. Scientists found 11 spots in DNA linked to the disorder. They also found 9 genes that may raise risk. The genetic risk overlaps with depression, PTSD, ADHD, and physical illnesses like diabetes and lung disease.
The number of DNA spots linked to borderline personality disorder in this genetic study.
One ancestry group studied, genetic score explains only 4.6% of risk.
