Giving a drug within 12 hours cut serious kidney damage or death by about one third.

Some cancer treatments cause tumors to break down fast. This releases harmful substances into the blood, a problem called tumor lysis syndrome. In a study of 1276 hospital patients, giving a drug called rasburicase within 12 hours lowered the risk of severe kidney damage or death. It also lowered the risk of dying within 90 days.

The sun's 11 year activity cycle changes how much deep ocean water forms in the North Pacific.

A layer of water sits deep under the ocean surface in the North Pacific. It stores climate patterns for years, like a slow memory. Eighty years of ocean data show this layer shrinks one to two years after the sun's activity peaks. Strong solar activity changes ocean winds, which thins the surface layer and blocks this deep water pocket from forming.

In spotted hyenas, inherited social rank made females more unequal in reproductive success than males.

In spotted hyenas, daughters inherit their mother's social rank. That rank brings real perks in life. Over eight generations, this inheritance made reproductive success more unequal among females than among males. This flipped the usual pattern seen in most animals, where males compete harder and show more unequal success.

Invasive species do more damage in poorer nations, not richer ones as long assumed.

Invasive species cause worse harm in poorer countries of the Global South than in wealthy northern nations. This is true even though scientists study invasive species in the Global South less than half as often. Weak government oversight and limited ability to control problem species explain most of this extra harm. Fast growing economies with poor governance face the highest risk.

A DNA study found 11 gene locations linked to borderline personality disorder.

A large study of DNA looked at over 12,000 people with borderline personality disorder and more than a million people without it. Scientists found 11 spots in DNA linked to the disorder. They also found 9 genes that may raise risk. The genetic risk overlaps with depression, PTSD, ADHD, and physical illnesses like diabetes and lung disease.
