Monsoon winds carry ground pollution high into the sky, sparking new tiny particles there.
Christina J. Williamson, Stephan Borrmann et al., Upper troposphere aerosol formation enhanced by monsoon lofted pollution, Nature Communications.
Every summer, monsoon winds over Asia carry dirty air high into the sky. This pollution helps form tiny new particles far above the ground. These particles grow large enough to affect clouds and sunlight. Winds then spread them across huge areas of the sky, both lower and higher up.
Shows pollution's likely role in forming particles that can reach clouds and affect sunlight.
