A bacterial DNA-cutting tool's exact shape reveals how it grabs and inserts new DNA.

A bacterial tool that cuts and pastes DNA has been mapped in fine detail. Scientists took clear 3D pictures of the tool while it grabbed a piece of DNA and cut it out. They also tested changed versions of the tool's parts. Some changes made it work better, which could help engineers design improved gene editing tools.
The images capture the tool's shape while it recognizes, cuts, and prepares to insert DNA.
