Warming rivers and lakes are not just getting hotter slowly. They are creating sudden temperature spikes that can trap fish in shrinking pockets of livable water. A study of 9,809 freshwater fish species found that many will face worsening heat barriers that cut off populations from each other, raising the risk of local extinctions.
