OCO‐3 Meets ECOSTRESS: Insights Into Ecosystem Diurnal Water‐Use Efficiency From Co‐Located Solar‐Induced Fluorescence and Thermal Observations

Two NASA satellites together tracked how efficiently plants use water, matching ground station data.

Zoe Amie Pierrat, Thomas P. Kurosu et al.

Two satellites can work together to track how plants use water. One satellite reads plant activity from space. The other measures surface heat. Combined, they matched ground measurements of plant water and carbon use, even during droughts and across the day.

What it could change Combined satellite readings of plant activity and heat can track how plants use water each day.

Shows the method works broadly but cannot yet spot fine differences between plant types.

Limited sample size restricts how finely this method can compare ecosystems.
