Desert dust pollution has risen sharply in Europe, especially in the south, and is linked to more deaths.

Petros N. Vasilakos, Abhishek Upadhyay et al., Rising dust pollution across Europe in a changing climate, Nature.

Dust from deserts is drifting into Europe more often, and it may be making air quality worse. Scientists built a computer model to track tiny dust particles in the air. They used daily measurements from many European sites, from 2012 to 2021. Dust levels were higher in southern Europe than in the north. In the south, big dust events were linked to a small rise in daily deaths. An ice record from the Alps shows dust has more than doubled since before factories and industry began. Drying land in North Africa is the main cause.
