A natural brain rhythm limits how fast people can understand speech, and speeding it up helps.

A brain rhythm sets the top speed at which people can understand speech. People struggle to understand speech once it goes faster than about 10 syllables per second. Scientists found that a natural brain wave, called the alpha rhythm, controls this speed limit. People with a faster natural alpha rhythm could understand faster speech. When scientists used mild electrical stimulation or sound pulses to speed up this brain rhythm, people got better at understanding very fast speech. Recordings from inside the brain showed why. Faster alpha activity in the left side of the brain's hearing area let the brain track fast speech sounds more closely.
