In a China model, wind and solar plans boost yearly solar power by over 57,000 gigawatt-hours through cleaner air.

Cleaner air helps solar panels catch more sunlight and make more power. Scientists built computer models of China's energy system, weather, and solar panels together. They found that a plan focused on wind and solar power cleans the air the most. This plan adds 57,526 gigawatt-hours of solar power each year, worth about 5.18 billion dollars by 2060. Plans that burn plant material or capture carbon from fossil fuels only get about a third of this benefit.

Women with a common sexually transmitted virus had slightly higher heart disease risk than uninfected women.

A study of nearly 500,000 women found a small link between a common sexually transmitted virus infection and heart disease risk. Women with this infection had a slightly higher chance of developing heart disease and dying from it, especially in the first year after infection. The link held up even when comparing infected women to their own sisters, which helps rule out family genes as the full explanation. Still, the extra risk was small, about half an extra heart disease case per 1,000 women each year.

In mice, a specific brain circuit controls how fast antidepressant treatments work.

In mice, turning on one brain region quickly eased depression-like behavior. This region, called the infralimbic cortex, sends signals through a small relay hub in the middle of the brain. That relay hub then talks to the hippocampus, a brain area tied to memory and mood. Blocking any part of this three-step path stopped the antidepressant effect, even for ketamine.

What it could change Blocking one brain pathway stopped both a stimulation therapy and ketamine from working in mice.

Water waves flowed almost untouched through a specially patterned messy surface instead of scattering.

A specially arranged messy pattern let long water waves pass through almost untouched, instead of scattering them. Scientists built a flat surface with bumps placed in this special messy but balanced pattern. They tracked water ripples moving across it and measured exactly where waves stayed strong and where they faded. The waves switched cleanly from bouncing all over the place to flowing through smoothly, matching a prediction that had never been directly measured before.

A computer program calculates how easily each tiny part of a protein opens, even in huge proteins.

Proteins are not stiff. Small parts of them open and close like tiny hinges. How easily each part opens changes how the protein works. A new computer program called PFNet reads results from a common lab test and quickly figures out how easily each small piece of a large protein opens up. This gives scientists a fast, detailed map of a protein's floppy and stable spots.
