In mice, a cholesterol-making protein secretly drives harmful immune cells that fuel autoimmune disease.

A protein called HMGCS1 usually helps cells make cholesterol. This study found it also controls a harmful immune cell instead. In mice, this protein turns on a stress signal inside cells. That signal tells certain immune cells to attack the body's own tissues. Blocking this protein calmed autoimmune disease in mice.

What it could change Blocking one protein in mouse immune cells reduced harmful autoimmune activity.

In worms and mice, a bacterial protein boosted energy use and health without shortening lifespan.

A protein taken from bacteria can speed up how cells make energy without the usual damage that speeds up aging. In tiny worms and mice, this protein boosted energy production and improved health signs over the animals' whole lives. It did not shorten how long the animals lived at their longest.

What it could change A bacterial protein raised cell energy output without adding the usual oxidative damage.

Solar Orbiter measured particle levels ten times higher despite a worse direct path to the eruption.

A giant burst of particles from the Sun did not behave the way scientists expected in February 2023. Earth and one spacecraft seemed to have a better direct magnetic path to the eruption. But a spacecraft called Solar Orbiter, which had a worse path, measured particle levels more than ten times higher. Computer models show the exploding cloud of solar material pushed out a lopsided shock wave, with one side much stronger than the other. A nearby disturbance in the solar wind bent the magnetic paths, so Solar Orbiter ended up connected to the strongest part of that shock.

Past slow slip events, not yearly water cycles, control when new ones start in Cascadia.

Slow earthquakes are gentle fault movements. They release stress without shaking the ground hard. Scientists expected yearly water cycles to control when these events happen along the Cascadia fault zone. Instead, the timing better matches stress changes from earlier slow slip events, and the spots where new events start have shifted over time.

What it could change Stress from past slow earthquakes better explains their timing than yearly water cycles do.

Based on patterns in historical tremor and slow slip data from Cascadia, not new physical measurements.

Internet fiber-optic cables under bridges can double as structural safety sensors.

Ordinary internet cables running through bridges can act as sensors that watch for damage. Light pulses sent through these fibers pick up tiny shakes and shifts, letting engineers track bridge movement down to a millimeter. This means cities could monitor aging bridges without paying to install brand new sensor networks. Engineers tested the method on six real bridges in the United States and South Korea.
