Only adults used broad memory context to guide choices; kids used single memories at every age.

Kids as young as 8 already use single memories of past choices to guide new decisions. But only adults, not children or teens, could use the wider context tied to many related memories. People with sharper memory used remembered events more often when deciding, and this also linked to how far ahead they could plan. The study tested 106 people ages 8 to 25 using a two day choice task.

Warming raised malaria in some African regions and lowered it in others, nearly balancing out overall.

Climate change has already changed malaria risk for children in Africa, but not in one simple direction. Warming raised malaria cases in East and southern Africa. At the same time, warming lowered cases in West Africa. These two effects mostly canceled out, leaving only a small overall change across the whole continent.

A crop-eating mite uses 64 copies of one protein to block a plant's chemical defense.

A tiny crop pest called the two-spotted spider mite carries 64 copies of a protective protein, more than any known living thing. Plants make harmful oxygen molecules to hurt cells that feed on them. The mite uses two of these proteins in a two-step defense. One is released into the plant while the mite feeds. The other works inside the mite's gut afterward. Together they block the plant's chemical attack.

In a simulated universe, star forming galaxies drift inward, throwing off growth rate measurements.

Galaxies that glow with active star formation are used to map the large-scale structure of the universe. In a computer simulation, these glowing galaxies tend to fall inward toward the center of their dark matter clumps. This inward motion makes scientists underestimate a key number that describes how fast cosmic structures grow. The bias disappears when scientists only look at very large distances, beyond about 15 times 3.26 million light years.

In lab tests, redesigned fungus-fighting drugs worked better and harmed cells less.

A group of natural drugs called polyenes kills fungi well. But they often harm the body and do not dissolve well in water. This makes them hard to use safely. Scientists found special enzymes that add sugar molecules and change a harmful chemical part of these drugs. The new versions killed fungi better and caused less harm to cells. These new drugs can be made using fermentation or simple lab reactions, instead of expensive multi-step chemistry.

What it could change A way to make safer, more potent fungus-fighting drugs using cheaper, cleaner methods.

Shows lab-made changes to an antifungal drug family, not results in patients.
