In mice, an antibody treatment for tumors fails without a working internal immune sensor.

In mice, a cancer immune treatment only worked when certain immune cells had a working internal sensor. This sensor sits inside the cell and detects foreign signals. It switches on genes that fight tumors. Without this sensor, treatment failed and tumor supporting immune cells stayed unhelpful.

What it could change A hidden immune sensor must work for an antibody cancer treatment to succeed in mice.

Warming is releasing trapped mercury, making Antarctic waters a growing mercury hotspot.

Mercury is a toxic metal that harms wildlife and people. It is building up on the sea floor near the Antarctic Peninsula, the part of Antarctica warming fastest. Scientists studied 16 sediment cores and built a model tracking mercury for 200 years. They found mercury buildup has grown by 160% since industrial times, twice the world's average shelf rate. Warming is melting ice and eroding land, which releases old mercury that had been trapped for over a century.

In spotted hyenas, inherited social rank made females more unequal in reproductive success than males.

In spotted hyenas, daughters inherit their mother's social rank. That rank brings real perks in life. Over eight generations, this inheritance made reproductive success more unequal among females than among males. This flipped the usual pattern seen in most animals, where males compete harder and show more unequal success.

A new blood test method found over 1,200 new gene-protein links in South Asian volunteers.

A new lab method measured thousands of proteins in blood from about 1,400 British South Asian people. It found over 1,200 links between genes and protein levels, and more than half were never seen before. The method also pointed to 21 proteins that may play a role in 44 diseases. One of these proteins showed a new link to a thyroid disease called Graves' disease.

Mercury has its own belt of trapped, energetic electrons that can survive for days.

Mercury has a hidden belt of fast moving, energetic electrons trapped around it, much like Earth's radiation belts. Scientists debated for decades whether this belt was real, since one old spacecraft saw hints of it but a later mission could not confirm it. New analysis of that later mission's data, combined with computer simulations, now shows the belt is real. It stays steady for days when the sun is calm, but falls apart quickly when the sun sends out strong bursts of charged particles.

What it could change Even a small, weak magnetic field like Mercury's can trap a radiation belt of fast electrons.

Shows Mercury can host a radiation belt despite its magnetic field being much weaker than Earth's.

Based on old spacecraft data and simulations, not a new direct mission.
