In mice, restoring a thymus hormone calmed inflamed immune cells and improved cancer treatment in old age.

A hormone from the thymus gland called thymulin drops as people and mice get older. This drop lets certain immune cells become more inflamed. Inflamed immune cells help tumors grow and resist treatment. In mice, giving back thymulin calmed these cells, boosted tumor fighting cells, and made cancer immune therapy work better in older animals.

What it could change A thymus hormone that drops with age was shown to calm inflamed immune cells in old mice.

This describes a lab finding in aged mice, not a treatment tested in people.

In monkeys, opening the brain's shield on one side made the opposite side work harder for oxygen.

Doctors want to use focused sound waves to briefly open the brain's protective shield. This lets drugs pass through into the brain. In monkeys, opening this shield on one side of the brain left the treated spot unchanged. But the matching spot on the other, untouched side had to work much harder to get oxygen. This shows the treatment can affect brain areas far from where it was aimed.

In a model, healthier diets by 2050 would cut global farm value by 1.6 trillion dollars.

A model looked at what would happen if the world shifted to healthier diets, cut food waste in half, and farmed more efficiently by 2050. Global farmland would shrink by 6%. Farm production would fall 17% below current plans, and total farm value would drop by 1.6 trillion dollars. Meat farming would shrink a lot, while fruits, vegetables, nuts, and beans would grow instead.

A DNA study found 11 gene locations linked to borderline personality disorder.

A large study of DNA looked at over 12,000 people with borderline personality disorder and more than a million people without it. Scientists found 11 spots in DNA linked to the disorder. They also found 9 genes that may raise risk. The genetic risk overlaps with depression, PTSD, ADHD, and physical illnesses like diabetes and lung disease.

Body size, diet, and brain size predict extinction risk in large tropical mammals across scales.

Some traits reliably predict which large tropical forest mammals are at risk of dying out, no matter if you study the whole world or just one region. This held true for body size, how long each generation lives, diet, brain size, and whether the animal climbs trees. But when studies also looked at different time spans, the risk predictions changed. This means big global studies can help guide local conservation, but only if scientists account for how much history each study covers.
