Genome-wide mapping of common and rare variant effects on adiposity across childhood

Hundreds of gene locations affect childhood weight but not adult weight in the same way.

Katherine A. Kentistou, Jonas Sundfjord et al.

Childhood body weight has its own genetic roots that differ from adult weight. Scientists compared genes from over 600,000 children and adults. They found 624 gene spots linked to childhood weight. One in three of these spots had no matching effect on adult weight. Some genes act through brain hormone systems that control hunger, and certain brain cells seem to manage weight only during childhood.
