Assessing Wildfire Hazard for Powerline Expansion Under the Changing Climates in Alberta, Canada
In a climate model, wildfire-risk days near Alberta power lines will rise by 8 to 15 days a year.
Xuezheng Zong, Xianli Wang et al.
Power lines can spark wildfires when weather turns hot, dry, and windy. A new model shows these fire-risk days will happen much more often in Alberta, Canada, by the end of this century. Over 30% of the land stays too risky for new power lines, while less than 16% counts as very low risk.
The predicted rise in power-line wildfire risk days in Alberta by late century.
Model-based projection for one region, not observed data yet.
