In mice, low-dose carbon ion radiation sparked stronger tumor immunity than a much higher x-ray dose.

A low, standard dose of carbon ion radiation can trigger a strong immune attack on tumors. Normally this level of immune response needs much higher doses of regular x-rays. The carbon ions push cancer cells to die in a messy, inflammatory way instead of a quiet way. This messy death alerts the immune system and helps it attack tumors elsewhere in the body, not just the treated spot.

The low carbon ion dose caused more immune-triggering cell death than a much higher x-ray dose.

In mice, a brain arousal center directly controls heart rate rhythms during sleep tied to memory.

A brain area called the locus coeruleus sends out a chemical in slow pulses during sleep, about once every 50 seconds. These pulses make the heart rate speed up and slow down in a matching rhythm. In mice, turning this brain area on or off with light directly changed heart rate patterns. Bigger heart rate swings lined up with more brain activity linked to memory storage, and with better memory the next day, in both mice and people.

1 in 5 women with a common hormone disorder had pain linked to it.

A common hormone disorder in women, once called polycystic ovary syndrome and now renamed, often causes pain that doctors overlook. Health records from over 103 million women showed that about 1 in 5 with this condition had pain, like painful periods or pelvic pain. Black and White women had the highest rates of pain. Women who took medicine for the condition had less pain afterward.

A computer model guesses wildfire causes, human or lightning, with 94.2% accuracy.

A computer program can guess if a wildfire started from lightning or from people. It learned this by studying over one million past fires from around the world. It looked at weather, land shape, and how much people had changed the area nearby.

Ancient seafloor vents lacked the strong chemical gradients needed to power the first life.

One popular idea says life started at seafloor vents shaped like tall mineral chimneys. These vents were thought to have strong chemical differences across their walls, like a battery, powering the first living cells. New evidence shows ancient vents likely had weak chemical differences instead. They also had almost no sulfur, and conditions too slow to build the complex molecules early cells would need.
