Grocery swap suggestions made online shopping carts healthier or lower carbon, depending on the suggestion type.

Pop-up suggestions for swapping groceries changed what people put in their online shopping carts. Suggesting greener food swaps lowered the carbon footprint of carts. Suggesting healthier swaps made carts more nutritious. Mixing both types of suggestions helped both goals a little, but did not beat single-focus suggestions at either one.

The number 4.7 point increase in healthfulness score (out of 100)

The improvement in grocery cart healthfulness when shoppers saw health-focused swap suggestions, compared to no suggestions.

In a model, tropical American and south China primates face the highest future climate risk.

Primate groups in tropical parts of the Americas and in southern China face the biggest risk from future climate change. A computer model followed 424 primate species using their family trees. It found these regions hold younger species groups with less evolutionary variety, plus heavy human pressure and few protected areas.

In worms, many different long-life tricks turn on the same set of genes.

Long-lived worms of many different types switch on many of the same genes. Nine kinds of roundworms lived longer through seven different biological tricks, yet they often turned the same gene sets up or down. Some worms split into two camps that flipped the same genes in opposite directions, showing there is more than one way to live longer. Turning on some of these shared genes alone let ordinary worms live longer and handle stress better.

In lab-grown human brain cells and mice, restless energy factories inside brain cells destabilize signals linked to bipolar disorder.

Brain cells grown from bipolar disorder patients cannot hold their tiny energy factories in place. These energy factories, called mitochondria, normally sit at the spots where brain cells send signals to each other. In bipolar cells, they move around too much and leave those spots empty, which drains energy and makes signals unpredictable. A drug called lithium fixed this problem in the lab and also fixed manic-like behavior in mice.

What it could change A cellular reason lithium may help calm bipolar disorder symptoms was uncovered in lab models.

Soft gel particles stretched sound-driven water jets up to 44% longer before breaking.

Adding tiny soft gel particles to water can make a fast, thin jet of liquid stretch much farther before it breaks apart. These particles link together at the water's surface into a stretchy web. The web holds the jet together longer. Softer particles kept this web intact. Stiffer particles broke apart under stress, so the jet snapped sooner. Computer models showed the soft particles form tangled bridges. These bridges lower the water's surface tension and let it stretch more.
