Liraglutide lowers a key water balancing hormone in healthy people and changes related proteins in rats.

A diabetes and weight loss drug called liraglutide lowers a hormone that helps the body hold onto water. This hormone is called vasopressin. In healthy people, the drug reduced blood levels of this hormone. In rats, the drug changed proteins inside the brain gland that makes this hormone. These changes were different in males and females. The drug also changed a water channel in the kidney that responds to this hormone.

What it could change A weight loss drug was shown to lower a hormone that controls body water and blood pressure.

Shown in healthy human volunteers and in rat brain and kidney tissue, not in patients with disease.

Siberian methane emissions grew 12 teragrams from 2010 to 2023, driven by fires and wet soil.

Methane gas released from Siberia's frozen ground and wetlands during the growing season jumped by 12 teragrams between 2010 and 2023. That is about 5% more each year. Warmer, drier weather in eastern Siberia caused more wildfires, which released methane. Wetter weather in western Siberia caused wetlands to release more methane too. By 2050, this rising Siberian methane could cancel out about 20% of the global methane cuts needed to meet climate goals.

A DNA folding map in human immune cells links gut disease risk genes to specific gene switches.

Immune cells called type 3 innate lymphoid cells help protect body linings like the gut, but scientists know little about how their genes get switched on. Researchers mapped the physical loops that DNA forms inside these cells, showing which distant DNA switches control which genes. This map linked known Crohn's disease risk spots to new candidate genes, including one already known to cause a rare childhood brain disease. When that same gene was boosted in mouse immune cells, it changed how the cells reacted to stimulation and which signaling chemicals they released.

In mice, fixing shrunken cell antennas in the brain's fear center eased stress behaviors.

Brain support cells called astrocytes have tiny hair-like antennas called primary cilia. In stressed mice, these antennas shrink inside a brain area called the amygdala, which controls fear and emotion. Fixing these antennas with a targeted drug signal restored their length and improved stress-related behaviors. Similar antenna genes were active in human amygdala astrocytes, and some were disrupted in people with stress-related brain disorders.

Joining social media before grade 9 lowered later test scores in Italian, English and math.

Kids who joined social media in grades 6 to 8 later scored lower on standard tests. Kids who waited until grade 9 or later scored better. The study followed 5,227 students in northern Italy, checking scores in Italian, English and math over time. Heavy smartphone use at key times of day seems to explain much of this gap.
