Fat filled immune cells inside liver tumors help cancer resist a common immunotherapy drug.

Liver cancer patients who did not respond well to a common immune drug had more fat filled immune cells inside their tumors. Scientists mapped single cells from 14 patients on the drug and 60 other liver cancer cases. They found these fat filled cells block the immune system from attacking the tumor. Two substances, lycopene and a diabetes drug called chiglitazar, changed these fat loaded cells and reduced their blocking effect.

Counting mutated gene copies, not just their presence, predicts cancer survival and spread patterns.

Tumors do not just carry mutated genes. They can carry different numbers of mutated copies of the same gene, and this amount seems to matter. A new computer method calculated these copy counts using over 500,000 mutations from 60,000 cancer samples. It did this without needing extra normal tissue samples for comparison. Looking at more than 20,000 patients, the method found 46 markers tied to survival, spread of cancer, or where cancer spreads to. Thirteen of these markers were missed by simpler tests that only check if a gene is mutated or not.

Parents pay 60% more for teen AI tools when they think peers already use them.

Parents pay much more for teen AI tools when they think other teens already use them. In a study of about 2,000 parents, raising the guessed share of peers using AI from 20% to 80% pushed willingness to pay up by more than 60%. Telling parents about possible skill risks changed their beliefs but not their own buying choices. It did make them want schools to restrict AI use much more.

Air and river heatwaves now strike together nearly three times more often than in the 1980s.

Rivers are heating up at the same time as the air above them, far more often than before. Combined air and river heatwaves have roughly tripled since the 1980s. River heatwaves alone became 114% more frequent, 148% longer, and 95% stronger over that time. These joint heatwaves push river water hotter and cut its oxygen, which can harm fish and other river life.

In lab tests, redesigned fungus-fighting drugs worked better and harmed cells less.

A group of natural drugs called polyenes kills fungi well. But they often harm the body and do not dissolve well in water. This makes them hard to use safely. Scientists found special enzymes that add sugar molecules and change a harmful chemical part of these drugs. The new versions killed fungi better and caused less harm to cells. These new drugs can be made using fermentation or simple lab reactions, instead of expensive multi-step chemistry.

What it could change A way to make safer, more potent fungus-fighting drugs using cheaper, cleaner methods.

Shows lab-made changes to an antifungal drug family, not results in patients.
