Fat filled immune cells inside liver tumors help cancer resist a common immunotherapy drug.
Liver cancer patients who did not respond well to a common immune drug had more fat filled immune cells inside their tumors. Scientists mapped single cells from 14 patients on the drug and 60 other liver cancer cases. They found these fat filled cells block the immune system from attacking the tumor. Two substances, lycopene and a diabetes drug called chiglitazar, changed these fat loaded cells and reduced their blocking effect.
